सुमित बिहार के एक छोटे से गाँव में रहता था जो सिवान से कुछ 20 किलोमीटर दूर था।  वह रोज़ सुबह अपने पिताजी के साथ खेतों में जाके काम करता था लेकिन उसे सिविल सर्विसेज की तैयारी करनी थी। घर में पैसों की तंगी थी और इसलिए वह केवल बारहवीं तक ही पढ़ पाया था।  एक दिन उसने यह बात अपनी माँ से कही जो एक सामान्य गृहिणी थी।  सुमित की बात सुनकर उसकी माँ बहुत भावुक हो गयी और उन्होंने सोचा कि अपने होनहार बेटे के लिए वो ज़रूर कुछ उपाय निकालेंगी। जब उस दिन सुमित के पिताजी घर आये तो उसकी माँ ने उनसे इस बारे में बात की।  पिताजी ने कहा कि बरसात और कीड़ों के कारण इस बार फ़सलों को बहुत नुकसान पहुँचा है। इस कारण इस बार भारी आर्थिक नुकसान हुआ है और ऐसे समय पर पढ़ाई पर खर्च करना संभव नहीं था। सुमित की माँ यह बात सुनकर निराश ज़रूर हुई लेकिन उन्होंने हिम्मत नहीं हारी, उन्होंने अचार और पापड़ के गृह उद्योग की शुरुआत की।  कुछ ही महीनों में अच्छे खासे पैसे आने लगे और अच्छी बारिश के कारण फ़सलें भी काफी अच्छी हुईं। अब सुमित के घर की आर्थिक स्थिति थोड़ी बेहतर होने लगी। सुमित ने यह सब महसूस किया लेकिन अपने माता -पिता पर बोझ न डालने के कारण से उसने फिर से पढ़ाई की बात नहीं की। एक दिन जब वह सुबह उठा तो उसने देखा कि डाकिया चिट्ठी छोड़ कर गया है, उसे खोलने पर उसने देखा कि उसमें ट्रेन की टिकट और कोचिंग क्लास की जानकारी है। अचानक पीछे से पिताजी ने उसके कंधे पर हाथ रख कर बोला, बेटा, अपनी पढ़ाई पूरी कर और अपना आई० ए० एस० बनने का सपना साकार कर। सुमित की आँखें नम हो गयी और उसने अपने माता – पिता से वादा किया कि वह दिल्ली जाकर उनका नाम रोशन करेगा और वह दिल्ली के लिए रवाना हो गया।

Translation

Sumit lived in a small village in Bihar which was some 20 Kilometers away from Sivan. He used to go to the fields daily along with his father and work but he wanted to prepare for the Civil Services. There were financial problems in the house and because of that, he was able to study only up to class 12th. One fine day, he told this

to his mother who was an ordinary housewife. After listening to Sumit, his mother got very emotional and she thought of devising a way for his sincere son. When Sumit’s father came home that day, his mother talked to him about this. Sumit’s Father told that due to rains and pesticides, crops have been severely damaged. Due to this, there has been huge financial loss and it is not feasible to spend on studies. Although Sumit’s mother got dismayed by listening to this, yet she didn’t give up, she opened a pickle and wafers home business. A good amount of money started to flow in a few months, and the crops were also good this time due to desired rainfall. Now, the financial condition of Sumit’s house had started improving. Sumit realized all of this but to avoid being a liability to his parents he didn’t discuss his studies. One day when he woke up in the morning, he saw that the postman had left a letter, on opening it he found a train ticket and coaching classes details. Suddenly from behind, his father while keeping his hand on Sumit’s shoulders said that complete your studies and fulfill your dream of becoming an I.A.S officer. Sumit became emotional and he promised his parents that he would make them proud after going to Delhi and he set out for Delhi.
