किसी भी छोटे शहर के लड़के के लिए दिल्ली जैसे बड़े शहर में कदम रखना बहुत ही बड़ी बात है। सुमित को इस बात का अहसास शायद ही था कि उसका रास्ता कितना कठिन होने वाला है। मुखर्जी नगर, जो सिविल सेवा परीक्षा की तैयारी के लिए काफी मशहूर है, वहाँ सुमित ने एक मकान किराये पर लिया। छोटे से कमरे के उसे पाँच हज़ार देने पड़े और साथ में हिमांशु नाम के लड़के के साथ वो कमरा साझा भी करना पड़ा। सुबह आठ बजे से लेकर शाम के सात बजे तक उसकी क्लासेज़ चलती थी और बीच में मुश्किल से बस खाने का समय मिल पाता था। बाहर का खाना खाने से सुमित की तबियत कई बार ख़राब हो जाती थी। कई सारी मुश्किलें झेलने के बाद भी सुमित ने अपने लक्ष्य से ध्यान नहीं भटकाया और पढ़ने में कोई कसर नहीं छोड़ी। हिमांशु भी होनहार लड़का था और वह और सुमित

मिलकर पढ़ाई किया करते। रोज़ घर से पिताजी का फोन आता तो सुमित उन्हें हौसला देता कि वह अपना और उनका सपना ज़रूर पूरा करेगा।  कई बार ऐसा भी होता कि दिन भर पढ़ने के बाद भी सवाल हल नहीं होते, इससे कई बार सुमित निराश होकर बैठ जाता। हिमांशु फिर उसे समझाता कि यह जीवन के उतार – चढ़ाव का एक हिस्सा है और इसे हिम्मत के साथ पार करना होगा। कभी – कभी पैसे ज़्यादा खर्च हो जाने के कारण, सुमित रात का खाना नहीं खाता था ताकि वह अधिक न खर्च कर दे। परीक्षा का समय पास आता जा रहा था और सुमित की घबराहट बढ़ रही थी।  सुमित के पिताजी ने उसका हौसला बढ़ाया और उसे खूब मेहनत करने की नसीहत दी। सुमित ने भी उम्मीद नहीं छोड़ी और लगातार कड़ी मेहनत करते रहा। आखिर एक साल के लम्बे इंतज़ार के बाद परीक्षा की घड़ी आ ही गयी।

Translation

For any boy hailing from a small town, stepping into a big city like Delhi is a huge thing. Sumit hardly had any idea about how difficult his path was going to be. Mukherjee Nagar, the area which is famous for the Civil Services Preparation, Sumit rented a house there. He had to pay five thousand rupees for such a tiny/small room and along with that share it with a boy named Himanshu. Classes used to be held from eight in the morning to seven in the evening and there was hardly some time in between for having food. Sumit fell ill several times due to the consumption of outside food. Despite facing so many problems, Sumit didn’t lose his focus on the aim and didn’t leave any stone unturned in his studies. Himanshu was also a sincere boy and he and Sumit used to study together. Every day, Sumit’s father used to call and Sumit gave him hopes that he would fulfill his dreams as well. Sometimes it used to happen that despite studying all day, he wasn’t able to solve any problem, Sumit got disheartened by this. Himanshu then explained to him that these are a part of the ups and downs of life and he has to face it with courage. Sometimes due to over expenditure, Sumit didn’t eat dinner to avoid additional spending. The day of examination was nearing and Sumit’s anxiety was increasing. Sumit’s father motivated him and advised him to work hard. Sumit didn’t lose hope and worked hard consistently. Finally, after a long wait of one year, the time of examination came.
