दिवाकर के पिता ने वो पैसे क़र्ज़ लौटने में लगा दिया, अब दिवाकर के पास स्कूल में देने के लिए पैसे नहीं थे। दिवाकर का एक बहुत ही ख़ास दोस्त था जिसका नाम था शंकर। शंकर एक सामान्य घर से था, दिवाकर के मुकाबले उसकी आर्थिक स्थिति काफी अच्छी थी। शंकर को पता लगा कि एक स्कॉलरशिप टेस्ट होने वाला है, दिवाकर पढ़ने में होशियार था और शंकर यह जानता था कि दिवाकर इस टेस्ट को पास करता है। शंकर ने बिना बताये खुद दिवाकर के नाम से टेस्ट का फॉर्म भर दिया, उसे पता था कि दिवाकर ने फीस नहीं भरी है तो उसे स्कूल के अंदर आने नहीं दिया जायेगा। टेस्ट का आयोजन एक दूसरे बड़े स्कूल में किया गया था जो पास में ही था। शंकर ने टेस्ट के कुछ दिन पहले दिवाकर को टेस्ट के बारे में बताया, दिवाकर की ख़ुशी का ठिकाना नहीं था। दिवाकर को पता था कि यह टेस्ट उसके लिए कई नए रास्ते खोल सकता है, उसकी आर्थिक तंगी जो हमेशा उसके पढ़ाई के आड़े आती थी शायद अब वो भी सुलझ जाए। अब दिवाकर कोई भी मौका नहीं छोड़ना चाहता था, उसने अपने सभी दोस्तों से किताबों का जुगाड़ किया और टेस्ट की तैयारी करने में जुट गया। आखिर टेस्ट का दिन आ गया, दिवाकर ने पूरी मेहनत से तैयारी की थी और आज उसका इम्तिहान था। दिवाकर ने अपना पूरा प्रयास किया और उसका टेस्ट बहुत ही अच्छा गया। कुछ दिनों बाद जब उस टेस्ट का रिजल्ट आया, दिवाकर दूसरे नंबर पर आया और जो पंद्रह बच्चे स्कॉलरशिप के लिए चुने जाने थे उसमे उसका भी नाम शामिल था। दिवाकर की ख़ुशी का ठिकाना नहीं था, उसने सबसे पहले ये खुशख़बरी अपने दोस्त शंकर को दी।  शंकर को तो मानो पहले से ही पूरा विश्वास था कि दिवाकर इस टेस्ट में शानदार प्रदर्शन करेगा, वह इस बात से बहुत खुश हुआ। इन सब ख़ुशियों के बीच में एक बुरी खबर भी थी जिससे दोनों दोस्त अनजान थे।

Translation

Diwakar’s father spent that money in returning the loan, now Diwakar did not have money to pay in school. Diwakar had a very special friend named Shankar. Shankar was from an ordinary family, his financial condition was much better than that of Diwakar. Shankar came to know that a scholarship test was about to take place, Diwakar was very bright in academics and Shankar was aware that Diwakar would pass that test. Shankar himself filled the test form on behalf of Diwakar without telling him, he knew that if Diwakar had not paid the fees, he would not be allowed inside the school. The test was held at another renowned school which was nearby. Shankar informed Diwakar about the test a few days before the test was to be held, Diwakar was on cloud nine. Diwakar knew that this test could open up many new opportunities for him, his financial problems which had always come in the way of his education might also be solved. Now Diwakar did not want to leave any stone unturned, he arranged books from all his friends and started preparing for the test. Finally, the day of the test arrived; Diwakar had worked hard and had his test today. Diwakar tried his best and his test went pretty well. A few days later when the result of that test came, Diwakar came in second and his name was included in the fifteen children who were to be selected for the scholarship. Diwakar was on cloud nine, he first gave this good news to his friend Shankar. As if Shankar was already confident that Diwakar would perform brilliantly in this test, he was very happy with this. There was also bad news amid all these happiness that both friends were unaware of.
